Welcome

A Message From Simon Troy

Hello,

Welcome to the Southern Locomotives Ltd website. Since this website was launched in 2009 it's been seen by over 300,000 people - over 60 per day. While most of our supporters are in Britain others are spread worldwide, and we appreciate everyone's interest and support.

From the inception of the Port Line Locomotive Project in 1983 we have restored a Barry wreck at an average rate of one every four years, most recently 34053 Sir Keith Park. Along the way we've done several major overhauls too. This has been achieved by a small team aided by a very large group of loyal supporters and volunteers. Our current restoration project is 34010 Sidmouth, and we're also taking initial steps on the restoration of 35025 Brocklebank Line which we acquired in 2020. We hope you will come on-board as we still have a lot of work to do, and money to raise, to meet our goals.

Some will wonder why we focus most of our efforts on the restoration and overhaul of Bulleid Pacifics. The same question was asked in 1983 when we were engaged on Port Line, but the fact is that there is no shortage of takers for big green locos with famous names and a pedigree. This was demonstrated by the huge response to the arrival of Sir Keith Park at the Spa Valley Railway during the middle of the Covid-19 crisis.

We have always treated our supporters equally, whether they are active volunteers or armchair supporters. Many people have taken the opportunity to Drive & Fire a loco once a year and to help with the our overhauls and restoration work.

If you decide to get involved you will have a real sense of ownership and pleasure from seeing "your" locos in action or in the workshops. We are not a "closed shop" and welcome new help - there is always plenty to do.

Please feel free to contact me if you would like more details about Southern Locomotives and its plans.
