The Shareholder Scheme

The success of the company in restoring so many locomotives is entirely due to the shareholder scheme and the support our shareholders have given us.

Below are some questions and answers about the Shareholder Scheme.

How much is a share?

£250.00

Can I pay in installments?

Yes. The minimum is £10.00 per month for 25 months but it can also be other combinations such as £25.00 per month for 10 months. We will ask you to fill out a Banker's Standing Order.

Is the share allocated to a particular locomotive?

Legally you are purchasing a share in Southern Locomotives but we ensure that the money you have paid is associated with the locomotive of your choice.

What if I buy more than one share?

That's fine, although each individual share should be associated with a particular locomotive.

How many shares can I buy?

As many as you want. There is no practical limit.

Will I receive a dividend on my shares?

No. We have so far aimed to not make any profit. Locomotive restoration is an expensive business but there are other benefits.

What benefits will I get from buying a share?

The main benefit is simply to see a newly restored locomotive and to know that you have played a part in its restoration. That, for many, is a reward in itself.

Secondly we try to ensure that any shareholder so wishing is able to get a footplate ride on any of our locomotives. We have been very fortunate in that the preserved railways that have operated our locomotives have always been most helpful in this respect. For a number of years, the Swanage Railway has arranged for groups of shareholders to have supervised footplate experience. In 2008 and 2009 many shareholders had the opportunity to drive 34070 Manston and in 2011 the star of the show was 34028 Eddystone.

Some kind of dividend?

Thirdly for those that feel fit and active there is the opportunity to help the locomotive restoration work in the Swanage workshop. The large number of working shareholders has been one of the reasons for the rapid restorations of our locomotives.

Can I buy shares for other people?

Yes, you can buy a share for any person, for example as a present for a grandfather or a grandson.

Can the shares be traded?

There is no open market for Southern Locomotive Ltd shares but they can be transferred into another person’s name on whatever basis they may agree privately.

How many shareholders are there?

There are currently around 650 shareholders who have bought shares to a value approaching £2,000,000. Most of our shareholders probably expected to only buy one share, however many have subsequently bought more! The company publishes statutory accounts annually.

Can I make a donation to Southern Locomotives?

Yes, if you wish to make a donation rather than buy a share that will be gratefully received. Please send a cheque to Southern Locomotives Ltd.

Can I make a bequest to Southern Locomotives?

Yes, you can make a bequest, i.e. a donation defined in your Will.

Can I pay by you bank transfer?

Yes. Our details are: Southern Locomotives Limited, Barclays Bank, S/C 20-90-56, A/C 70826235. Please do send us an email or letter with your application, so that we can connect your money with the share application.
